Since 1992, The Modern Brass has established itself as one of the foremost proponents of brass chamber music in Los Angeles. With a stalwart dedication to the performance of serious repertoire for brass, the group has included some of Los Angeles's most venerated performing musicians. The Modern Brass Quintet features trumpeters Marissa Benedict and Daniel Rosenboom, horn player Dylan Hart, trombonist Steven Suminski, and tubist Doug Tornquist, and expanded versions of the ensemble have featured many of the premiere brass musicians in Los Angeles, including such notable guest soloists David Washburn and Malcolm McNab, and guest conductor Tim Morrison.
As advocates for the performance and expansion of the canon of brass chamber music literature, The Modern Brass has given world premieres, as well as US and West Coast premieres, of many new compositions, and has championed some of the lesser known gems within the repertoire. The group is also dedicated to the continuing establishment of the brass quintet as a serious and respected form of chamber music, and actively seeks compelling composers to collaborate with in the expansion of the repertoire. With an ear for variety and a respect for history and lineage, the group performs music from all eras, and draws the line from old to new with grace, elegance and dedication.
Using the quintet as a core, the Modern Brass presents concerts and ensembles that both expand and contract as programs demand. From large brass ensembles featuring both premiere members of the Los Angeles brass community and excelling students, to world-famous guest soloists performing with the quintet, the goal is always to present the most compelling array of brass concert music as possible. With a repertoire that includes works by Witold Lutoslawski, J.S. Bach, Toru Takemitsu, Jan Bach, John Harbison, and countless other salient brass composers, the Modern Brass strives to portray a lineage of possibilities from the classics to the most cutting edge.
